The Day in Politics
In Australia COVID still dominates the news cycle, although other issues are slowly again gaining the attention of the media.
COVID-19
COVID issues include ongoing border restrictions, vaccine availability and vaccine certificates. Border restrictions remain in a number of Australian States and Territories. Hotel quarantine continues to be a thorn in the side of all governments attempting to suppress COVID in Australia.
The official position of the Federal Government is that the COVID vaccine will be voluntary. However, in practice that seems far from the case. The Federal Government is working on an electronic COVID vaccine certificate. It has also passed legislation making notification of vaccines to the Federal register mandatory. This is a very concerning development. Having a certificate which effectively gives the holder additional rights to an ordinary citizen without the certificate is only one step removed from China's social credit score. Once implemented, what is to stop the Government, or a subsequent government, from adding other criteria to the holding of the certificate?
The Possibly Upcoming Australian Federal Election
The Australian election is not due until next year; however, speculation is rife that Morrison will call an early election possibly later this year. Albanese, the Opposition Leader, has been touring Queensland, which is the state where most analysts agree the ALP lost the last federal election. The ALP slogan for the possibly upcoming election seems to be 'on your side' which is a clever piece of political strategy in that it allows the ALP to have no policy; the answer to everything is just, we are 'on your side'. It will be interesting to see the LNP strategy to counter this slogan.
Keswick Island Issues Foreign to the Foreign Minister
Fordham (2GB) this morning asked Payne (Foreign Minister) about the issues arising on Keswick Island with the Chinese lease. She claimed to have no knowledge of the matter. Payne needs to resign, this is just simply unacceptable from the Foreign Minister. In regards to the potential Chinese city being built in the PNG she merely reiterated her commonly used phrase that Australia is raising the full range of its interests with China.
