World Events

 Multiple significant occurrences are simultaneously happening in the world at present. This post will start to highlight some of these and hopefully will build on and add to in subsequent posts:

The United States election debacle continues with Biden-Harris (Democracts) claiming victory in the presidential election, whilst Trump (Republicans) is claiming that the election result is subject to ongoing litigation relating to fraudulent votes and fraudulent vote counting. Meanwhile, COVID continues, but apparently only if you are not celebrating winning the election.

China has a number of significant considerations including COVID-19, the treatment of the Uyghurs, the human rights comments on the United States and the border control issues with imports from Australia.

Hong Kong continues to feel the effects of the Chinese influence in its democracy. It seems that the Chinese agenda may be to move to a situation where it seeks to see Hong Kong no longer recognised as an independent country, similar to issues with Taiwan.

Azerbaijan and Armenia conflict continues

Israel is again being criticised for actions on the West Bank.

Peru: CNN is reporting that Congress has ousted the President Vizcarra

In Australia, the QLD government was returned, the NSW Legislative Council successfully passed a motion referring the NSW Premier (Berijiklian) to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). The anti-government litigation efforts relating to COVID all seem to have failed. COVID border closures are still in place although they are starting to be relaxed.

 One of the great travesties of modern politics is the failure of the fourth estate (the media) to objectively provide information which informs the reader who can then determine their own perspective. This failure by the fourth estate has significantly escalated the tensions around the election result and, when combined with the partisan coverage of the earlier BLM protests and exclusion zones, has significantly contributed to the inflamed tensions within the American people. Worldwatch 12 January 2022

 International Relations China/Russia/North Korea/Iran China continues to assert its sovereignty over Taiwan; although, at this stage has stopped short of enforcing such sovereignty. North Korea claims to have tested a hypersonic missile. (Reuters). Russia is engaging in military activity on the Ukrainian border raising fears of an imminent invasion. Hong Kong continues to move toward resembling Chinese political culture with opponents arguing that freedom of the press and democracy itself are being restricted by government. United States/Japan/India/Australia (Quad) Japan and Australia sign an historic bilateral military cooperation agreement and Australia orders tanks from the US in addition to its recent submarine order. The closer links between Australia and Japan and the US are only going to further antagonise China. NSW Politics The Liberal Party has elected Dominic Perrottet as the new leader with Stuart Ayres as his deputy. Perrottet has foreshadowed some changes to the health orders, but has refused to be drawn on any specifics until after he has met with the health team and the Health Minister. COVID Victoria has recorded 1763 cases, reportedly the highest of any Australian jurisdiction. This seems to clearly demonstrate that Andrews', the Victorian Premier's, criticism of the NSW government for not locking down early and hard were misplaced. Given that hard and fast lockdowns do not work with the Delta variant, surely there needs to be a reanalysis of the risk profile as to what effect and benefit any health orders may have. NSW is currently scheduled to 're-open' to vaccinated people on Monday 11 October. Draft health orders have been released for that date.
