US Politics

One of the great travesties of modern politics is the failure of the fourth estate (the media) to objectively provide information which informs the reader who can then determine their own perspective. This failure by the fourth estate has significantly escalated the tensions around the election result and, when combined with the partisan coverage of the earlier BLM protests and exclusion zones, has significantly contributed to the inflamed tensions within the American people.

Although it is easy to blame Trump, for today's invasion of the Capitol building, like most things, it is never that straight forward and the fourth estate has a lot to answer for.

Biden has demanded Trump appear on national television demanding the mob leave the capital. Trump appeared on national television and told the protestors to leave peacefully.

Simultaneously, it appears that the Democrats have won the Georgia Senate run-off. Unfortunately, there appear to be similar 'shadows of doubt' around the practices in this election as there was in the Presidential election. It would be beneficial if the fourth estate would fulfil its role and clearly air the allegations and the explanations for what appears to be suspicious conduct. Of course, this will not happen, further leading to suspicions amongst Republicans that the run-off was stolen. When people lose faith in the democratic process to create government that fairly represents them, the social contract is in danger and situations similar to the Capitol invasion will become more frequent.

As for America, it appears that Biden will now be inaugurated as President with Harris as Vice-President, although how long that arrangement will last before Harris becomes President is anyone's guess. With Biden also now having control of both houses of Congress there seems little to prevent the extreme policies within the Democratic party from being implemented. At their worst, America will no longer be a western democracy and will rapidly decline into socialism and anarchy.

Only time will tell exactly how much the Democrats will erode the classical liberal foundational principles of the US Republic and what the response of those feeling disenfranchised will be.
